After Italy's surrender on the 8th September 1943, many of the prisoners of war, held in Italian camps, defied the 'stay put order', issued by the Allies and made a run for it. they would either head south towards the allied lines or north, perhaps hoping to escape by boat from the coast or get over the alps to Swizerland.
This route follows in the footsteps of some of the soldiers of the British commonwealth and Italian Army's who scaled the Monte Rosa range from the alpine villages above the Aosta Valley. To find out more about this journey hit the big red button.
